Bhavania australis | Indian Native Series
Bhavania australis, commonly known as the Western Ghats loach, is a species of hillstream loach endemic to the Western Ghats in southern India, particularly in the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
Habitat and Distribution: This species inhabits fast-flowing streams and rivers within the Western Ghats mountain range. It is typically found clinging to rocks and submerged surfaces in clear, oxygen-rich waters.
Physical Characteristics: Bhavania australis exhibits a dark dorsal surface adorned with irregular black spots. It can grow up to a maximum size of approximately 9 cm.
Conservation Status: While the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed Bhavania australis as a species of Least Concern, recent studies suggest it faces threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and practices like dynamite fishing, which may endanger its populations.
In Captivity: Maintaining Bhavania australis in aquarium settings poses challenges. Observations indicate that the species struggles to thrive in captivity for extended periods, often not surviving beyond a month. It is generally peaceful and tends to adhere to the glass surfaces of tanks.
Additional Information: Genetic research has revealed that what is currently identified as Bhavania australis may encompass multiple cryptic species, potentially up to seven distinct species that are morphologically similar but genetically distinct.
