I miss the old days...you know the ones before WhatsApp, when interacting with a community had its own joys. Don't get me wrong...I appreciate the changes whatsapp has brought about, especially bringing like-minded individuals (read hobbyists in our case) together, in real-time conversations. And therein lies the problem..." real-time conversations"!

For someone who is usually a spectator in our aquarium-related hobby groups, it never ceases to amaze me how a question that was answered recently by an experienced member of the group, is quickly forgotten in the avalanche of messages that flow, only for the same question to be asked by another member in the following days! Or for that matter, when someone asks that question (already asked!) and no one answers (obviously since 1. it was already answered;2. everyone is busy with their priorities!) What happens next is, referring to the point I began with...' why I miss the old days'. What happens next is that the person who has asked the question becomes increasingly restless and anxious as to why no one has bothered to even acknowledge his question!

This brings me to the problem we have been introduced to by the rapid advances in technology (read WhatsApp in this case). The one asking the question is assuming everyone else is not so busy and as such his message deserves an immediate response. Patience and respect be damned.

That is why I miss the old days of web forums, where you could post a question and the community members would reply, as and when convenient and it will form a nice relevant thread, where members could upvote or downvote the responses. And it stayed in perpetuity!

So, while we have our WhatsApp groups and those serve a very important purpose- that of immediacy, I long to have close group conversations with our community, where we have senior hobbyists sharing their experiences with newbees, interactions that forge bonds, shared learning experiences and just growing in the hobby that binds us together.

Welcome to the Weekend Aquarist Community! We hope to build this community together with curated news, online and in-person events, conversations, interviews with senior aquarists and invite-only Q & A sessions with experts.

Become a Founding Member of The Weekend Aquarist. Join a niche group of patrons who are keen to see this hobby grow. Show us your support and be a part of an exclusive community of like-minded aquarists.
